Since 1947, Tonka has built trucks the same way real machines are built: metal where it matters. A Tonka gets buried, rained on, driven off porches — and rolls out the other side with a few honest scratches and a longer story. That is why so many of the trucks in this catalogue are bought by parents who still own their own.
Three men found Mound Metalcraft in an old schoolhouse to make garden implements: tie racks, hoes, hand tools for grown-ups. The rights to a couple of metal toy designs come in through the back door, almost as an afterthought.
The first two steel toys ship, the Steam Shovel No. 100 and the Crane and Clam No. 150, and about 37,000 of them sell by the end of the year. Garden tools never stand a chance after that.
Lake Minnetonka nearby takes its name from the Dakota Sioux word tanka, meaning great or big. On the logo since 1947, the name goes official when Mound Metalcraft becomes Tonka Toys.
A slab of yellow steel with a tipping bed that has stayed in production, in one form or another, for six decades. Still the best-selling machine in this catalogue, and the design your own childhood truck probably shared.
Hasbro buys the brand; today the trucks are made by Basic Fun! under licence. Still steel where it matters, still yellow.

How to read it: Steel body is the standard Classics build, 2X steel marks the heavier Retro Collector machines, and Steel duo means a boxed pair from the Giga line. Ratings come from verified owner reviews on the authorised listings, tens of thousands of them across the range. If two trucks look tied, the one with more ratings has simply survived more sandboxes.
Spec tables only say so much. This hands-on look at the Steel Classics line shows the Mighty Dump and Bulldozer out of the box: the weight, the rolled edges and how the beds and blades move.

I had this exact truck in 1988. My son buried his in the sandbox in June, we found it in August, and it rolled out with a chip on the tailgate and nothing else to report. He does not know it is a thirty-year plan, but it is.

The Retro line uses twice the steel of the standard classics. Only the toddler-focused Interactive Talking Truck is all sturdy plastic, by design.

The steel lines are rated for ages 3 and up. The Interactive Talking Truck is rated from age 2. Realistically, the upper limit does not exist — a large share of Retro Collector's Edition buyers are adults.
